Postcards from Oregon
We spent a week in Oregon visiting family and trying to take in as much of the Pacific Northwest as we possibly could in a short stretch of time. On the coast, we started at Cannon Beach spending a couple days enjoying the incredible sights all the way down to Depoe Bay. And naturally, Hans Zimmer was playing through the speakers, which made the whole trip feel even more cinematic. It was very windy, very wet, the kind of weather that makes everything feel a little blurred at the edges—like a film camera. Ocean mist in the air, gray skies, cold cheeks, and our voices diffused by the wind.
From there we headed inland and stayed at the base of Mount Hood in Rhododendron. Our cabin was tucked into the most beautiful pine forest. Hot tub for hours in the rain, waterfall hikes by day, s’mores by night, and all the forrest vibes while we were there.
Then we made our way through the lovely town of Hood River and the Columbia River Gorge—which was the surprise part of the trip, because those days were completely unplanned. One of the most unique experiences in the gorge was watching trains from above, where we could see the entire train stretching across the landscape from beginning to end. One on each side of the gorge at once. We loved the way the mountains kept appearing no matter which direction we looked, kindly arguing as a family which mountain we were seeing.
Of course time spent bonding with nephews and enjoying the strong cousin relationship form was as magical as any view we saw. The week moved quickly, faster than I think any of us expected. Like we were trying to hold onto it while it was already becoming memory.
